As LGBTQ+ Pride Month kicks off, we’re sharing few reminders we all want to keep in mind when advocating for the rights, dignity, and freedom of all.
Be involved
Be an active accomplice, not merely an ally. If you feel safe enough and able to risk your own reputation, speak up. Use your power and privilege to challenge the status quo.
Fight for LGBTQ+ rights
Whether its legislation affecting millions or a bigoted “joke,” refuse to tolerate intolerance. Everyone deserves basic human rights, validation, care, safety, and to be celebrated.
Support LGBTQ+ businesses
Rainbow logos are nice—but buying from LGBTQ-owned brands and businesses can truly bring visibility to the LGBTQ+ community, and support deserving business owners!
Educate yourself
It’s not the job of LGBTQ+ people to educate everyone else about their identity, struggles, proper terms, and every aspect of their existence. There is a wealth of information, as well as many individuals who advocate and educate full time. Learn what you can, and put it into practice to be accurate and kind in your daily life and conversations. (And keep an eye out in the coming days for some great resources!)
Listen and amplify
That said, if you’re fortunate enough to know a LGBTQ+ person who would like to share, be open to learning from them. Everyone is different, and the best source of information about LGBTQ+ experiences are the people living them. Listen—and when you can, share their messages and stories.
Happy Pride Month! The State of Women Institute focuses on women, girls, and anyone of any gender whose life includes or has included feminine experiences. The State of Women means ALL women—and human rights mean human rights for all.
