Women Photographers: Stunning Photos, Moving Stories, Skilled Artists

This week kicked off with World Photography Day, and women are being recognized now more than ever for the pivotal role they’ve always played in shining a light on important issues, producing masterful work, and telling stories through images. Today, we wanted to share with you a few stories about women photographers and featuring the inspiring, important work they do. Click through to learn more and to discover some amazing photos.

At the Sackler Gallery, a Rarely Seen View of Iran by Six WomenPhotographers, from The Washington Post—“A new exhibition at the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, ‘My Iran: Six Women Photographers,’ aims to challenge the stereotype of voiceless Iranian women, presenting a more nuanced view of the country through the work of some of its most talented contemporary photographers.”

These Striking Portraits of Female Athletes Help Address the Gender Gap in Sport Photography, from CNN—“If you’re a high-level female executive, your chances of having been involved in sports as a young woman are 90 percent. If you’re a CEO or higher, it goes up to 96 percent. Those are really incredible numbers. And then, if you look at how we’re encouraging women to be in sports — it’s dismal. They fund the boys’ teams with millions of dollars, the girls get no funding, when you could easily argue that the girls are the ones that need the funding. […] But just seeing them on TV, in media, posters, whatever, does phenomenal things for keeping girls in sports.”

Photography No More a ‘Man’s Profession’. Girls of Patna Women’s College Exhibit City Life Through Their Lenses, from Hindustan Times—“Different shades of Patna comprising stills of urban life to the ensigns of rural landscapes, illuminated streets to darkness downing on the city, sky-high monuments to dilapidated roads, the gusto of life to evening silhouette were all there exhibiting the latent potentials and dexterity of the city’s young lensworms. The venue was the Patna Women‘s College (PWC); the occasion was the two-day photo exhibition based on the theme ‘Patna: Cityscape and street life’ to mark World Photography Day.”

World Photography Day: How Many Women Have Won World Press Photo of the Year?, from Euronews—“Jodi Bieber, born in Johannesburg, South Africa, won the most prestigious prize in the world of photography in 2010 — the World Press Photo of the Year. Her winning photograph was a striking portrait of Bibi Aisha, a young Afghan woman mutilated by her husband after trying to flee her home. Yet Bieber is one of only four women who have won the award in its 64-year history.”

What Does It Mean to ‘Surf Like a Girl’? An Empowering Photo Series of Thirty Female Surfers, from Creative Bloom—“There’s American professional surfer Lindsay Steinriede on how her father’s death has inspired her career and French board shaper Valerie Duprat on how she got her start “sculpting foam”. There’s also Conchita Rössler, founder of Mooana Retreat in Portugal, on connecting mind, body and spirit; and Australian photographer Cait Miers on empowering women. You’ll also meet surfers who are over sixty, who surf while pregnant, who captain boats, teach yoga and make movies.”
