Good News for the Holidays

It’s hardly newsworthy to point out that 2020 has been a long year for most of us. And we won’t downplay any of that, or make a trite “Hindsight is 20/20” comment here. But tough times can inspire the best in people; especially the amazing, resilient, strong, compassionate women we cover and with whom we share this amazing community (and we definitely include all of you). So for the holidays, we thought we’d bring you a few articles covering only good news. Big and small, inspirations and welcome developments: It’s important to take stock of the good that has happened because of and for women. Enjoy; take care; and have a safe, loving, and happy holiday season, however you celebrate (or don’t). We are so proud and inspired to have you all with us on our mission to help all girls and women thrive. 

Women of Color-Led Fund Is ‘Breathtakingly Hopeful’ About Plan to Move $100 Million, from Inside Philanthropy—“The [Groundswell Fund] donor group has been around for 15 years and funds more than 150 organizations doing intersectional work on reproductive and social justice. They’ve launched such high-impact campaigns as the Rapid Response Fund, which seeks to steer resources swiftly to important causes; the Birth Justice Fund, which focuses on pregnancy disparities for women of color and trans people; and the Black Trans Fund, whose 2020 grantee, For the Gworls, became an essential source of mutual aid for Black trans women in New York City amid the COVID-19 pandemic.”

Black Scientist Shares Inspiring Message After Helping Design COVID-19 Vaccine: ‘Lives Are About to Be Saved’, from Yahoo Life—“Kizzmekia Corbett, Ph.D., a 34-year-old virology researcher, celebrated the accomplishment on Instagram, writing, ‘Today, people will get vaccinated with a vaccine that I woke up on Jan. 11th to frantically help design.’ […] Now, nine months and 76,000,000 COVID-19 cases globally later, people are being administered the vaccine under an emergency use authorization. ‘Lives are about to be saved. Hospitals will become less overwhelmed. Normal times will slowly begin again,’ she said.”

Good News in 2020? Yes, It’s True! Here Are 100 Positive Things That Happened This Year, from USA TODAY—“This is not meant to minimize the harsh reality of an incredibly difficult year. Many lost loved ones. Many are struggling. Many feel sad, scared, frustrated and broken. But while this year seemed especially hard, there were silver linings. Out of coronavirus came creativity. Out of quarantine came bonus time with family. Out of activism came changes for the better. One thing we can try to do is to remember the good. Maybe this list will help.”
