International Women’s Day was a week ago, but we wanted to keep the conversation going with just a few ways The State of Women works to #BreakTheBias. Thank you all for joining us in this mission and conversation, and for the incredible work you all do fighting for gender equality.
International Women’s Day celebrates the achievements and contributions of women around the world and throughout history—but the day and Women’s History Month are also a time to acknowledge the very real barriers and biases faced by women.
Despite hard work and successes over the years, gender discrimination continues. Equal Pay Day, which today illustrated the persisting gender wage gap in the United States; gender-based discrimination and violence around the world; lack of representation for women and girls in policy and leadership positions; and more all highlight the need to keep fighting bias in the world and in our own lives. Here are just five ways we work to break the bias.
Informing
On social media, on our website, at our events, and in our collaborations: The State of Women examines bias, explores diverse perspectives, highlights obstacles women face, and questions stereotypes and assumptions about gender roles and values. We work to be conscious of our perspective and bias (we all have it!), and to be truly inclusive.
Amplifying
Together with our sister organization, SHEQONOMI, we provide a megaphone through our tech and social platform. This lets us broadcast our message, but more importantly: We get to amplify the voices of women podcasters from around the world. We have a responsibility to pass the mic and amplify ALL voices.
Educating
To truly reach gender equality, women and girls must have equal access to information, education, and guidance. Our Global Digital Library, collaborations with leaders in several fields, and support of initiatives devoted to equity and accessible education are all focused on breaking the bias in information. Everyone deserves a quality education.
Supporting
From working with partners to raise funds for marginalized groups, to providing tech to underserved communities, to shining a light on trailblazing women in spaces dominated by men and traditionally considered “male” like finance, tech, podcasting, and business; we believe in supporting anyone regardless of gender—giving everyone a true chance to succeed.
Learning
We’re all learning! We all make mistakes, but we’ll always work to be transparent, honest, and willing to change. We welcome any ideas, corrections, or questions and we invite you to feel free to share your ideas and perspective any time. Every connection is a new opportunity to learn, change, and grow. We promise to do the hard work of learning every day.
We can always do more, and we’re always striving to do so! Contact us any time or join us here or on any of our social media platforms to share your voice—and to share how we can better serve and amplify all women. Happy Women’s History Month. Let’s make it our year, decade, and generation.
